Expedition Overview

The Kuari Pass Trek—famously known as the Lord Curzon Trail—is one of the Garhwal Himalayas' premier winter and spring circuits. Originating near Joshimath, the trail winds through dense rhododendron and oak woodlands before opening onto high alpine meadows (bugyals). At the ridge crest of Kuari Pass (12,516 ft), trekkers are treated to an unmatched 360-degree panorama of India's most celebrated peaks, including Mt. Nanda Devi, Kamet, Dronagiri, and Trishul. With gentle gradients, moderate daily trail times, and well-spaced acclimatization stops, it provides a safe yet awe-inspiring introduction to high-altitude Himalayan wilderness.

Day-by-Day Trek Itinerary

The journey begins early in the morning from Rishikesh, embarking on a mountain drive that traces the sacred Alaknanda River along the Badrinath highway. Along the way, you pass through the historic river confluences (Prayags)—Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag—witnessing dramatic transitions from subtropical foothills to rugged pine-clad gorges. You reach Joshimath by late afternoon or evening, check into a guesthouse or homestay, and attend a trek briefing to check gear and prepare for the trail ahead

After breakfast, a short drive brings you to the roadhead at Dhak or Tugasi village, where the foot journey begins. The route ascends steadily along terraced farmlands and rustic village settlements before entering mixed woodlands of oak, pine, and rhododendron. As you gain height, opening clearings reveal sweeping sights of the Dhauliganga valley and the snow-streaked flank of Mt. Dronagiri. You arrive at Gulling Top by early afternoon, giving your body ample time to acclimatize at high elevation.

Trail Duration ~4 Hours
Mountain Meals Breakfast, Trail Lunch & Dinner

Leaving Guling behind, you head deeper into lush forests of golden oak, birch, and giant rhododendrons. The gradient stays mostly moderate with short steep sections across rocky clearings and babbling glacial streams. Approaching the upper tree line, the thick forest yields to the open meadows of Khullara Campsite. The campsite offers front-row panoramas of Hathi-Ghoda Parvat and Dronagiri, making it an extraordinary vantage point for sunset and stargazing.

The summit push starts before dawn to catch clear skies and firm snow or dirt trails. You climb past Khullara Top and traverse exposed alpine ridgelines often buffeted by cold mountain winds to reach the Kuari Pass Trek summit. Standing at the ridge crest awards an amphitheater of peaks: Nanda Devi (India's second-highest peak), Kamet, Dronagiri, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Neelkanth. After taking in the views, you retrace your steps to Khullara (or Tali) for hot food and rest.

Trail Duration ~9 Hours
Mountain Meals Breakfast, Trail Lunch & Dinner

The final trekking segment is largely a steady downhill descent. The trail leads through alpine slopes and oak canopies down toward Tugasi/Dhak (or along the meadow crossing over Gorson Bugyal towards Auli). Descending relieves the strain of high elevation, and the valley temperatures turn noticeably milder. Vehicles meet the team at the roadhead for a quick drive back to Joshimath, where you check into a hotel for hot showers and a celebratory dinner.

Overnight Stay homestay
Trail Duration ~6 Hours
Mountain Meals Breakfast, Lunch,Snacks, Dinner

Following an early breakfast, you begin the return drive down along the Alaknanda and Ganga valleys. The route descends from the higher Himalayas through Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Srinagar, and Devprayag. You arrive back in Rishikesh by late evening, concluding the 6-day circuit with ample time for onward overnight buses or trains to Delhi.
