Expedition Overview

The Dayara Bugyal Trek, nestled in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, is celebrated as one of the most picturesque high-altitude meadow treks in the Garhwal Himalayas. Originating from heritage villages like Raithal or Barsu, the trail ascends through dense canopies of oak, pine, and flowering rhododendron before opening onto an expansive 28-square-kilometer tableland of rolling alpine pasture (bugyal). Reaching a maximum elevation of 12,050 feet at Bakaria Top, the trek reveals a sweeping 360-degree panorama of towering peaks, including Mt. Bandarpoonch, Kala Nag (Black Peak), Srikanth, Draupadi Ka Danda, and the Gangotri massif. Because the route features gentle gradients, well-defined forest paths, and scenic campsites like Gui and Chilapada, it serves as an ideal, year-round introductory trek for beginners and families—transforming from lush, wildflower-carpeted slopes in spring and summer into a vast, powdery snowfield in winter.

Day-by-Day Trek Itinerary

The journey departs early morning from Dehradun, following the winding Bhagirathi river valley along Mussoorie and Chamba bypasses up to Uttarkashi. Beyond the bustling pilgrim hub of Uttarkashi, the road climbs into the higher Himalayan foothills toward Raithal, a picturesque village known for its distinctive wooden Garhwali houses and terraced apple orchards. After arriving and checking into a village homestay or base camp, the evening is spent acclimatizing, reviewing safety procedures, and watching the sunset cast golden hues across the distant Gangotri mountain range.

The trek starts from Raithal along a stone-paved trail leading past terraced farms before plunging into rich subalpine forests of brown oak, maple, and rhododendron. The trail climbs at a gentle, consistent gradient with occasional clearings that overlook Mt. Shrikanth and the Gangotri group across the valley. You arrive at Gui Alternate Campsite by early afternoon, a peaceful forest clearing centered around an alpine pond and surrounded by rustic shepherd huts

This short acclimatization trek transitions your route out of the dense tree canopy toward the alpine treeline. The path winds steadily past old silver firs, dwarf rhododendrons, and babbling freshwater streams that remain partially frozen in winter. Arriving at Chilapada by midday leaves ample daylight for an afternoon acclimatization walk up the slopes, giving your body adequate time to adapt to higher elevations while enjoying close-up vistas of Mt. Bandarpoonch and Kala Nag (Black Peak).

Starting near dawn, the trail breaches the upper treeline to reveal the immense, undulating meadows of Dayara Bugyal, which span roughly 28 square kilometers. Trekkers navigate the rolling ridges up to Bakaria Top, the highest vantage point on the trail. Standing at the crest provides a dramatic 360-degree theater of snow peaks—Bandarpoonch, White Peak, Draupadi Ka Danda, Gangotri I, II, and III, and Jaonli. After soaking in the panoramic vistas, you descend across the meadows back to the shelter of the camp at Chilapada or Gui.

The descent is a pleasant, knee-friendly downhill trek that takes a different ridge route through thick oak woodlands and clear streams toward Barsu (or loops back to Raithal). As you descend, the cooler alpine air gives way to milder valley breezes, with expansive vistas over the Bhagirathi valley villages below. Reaching the roadhead village by early afternoon, you settle into a guesthouse for hot showers, regional Garhwali cuisine, and a celebratory final evening on the trail.

After an early morning breakfast, you board your return vehicle and trace the highway down the Bhagirathi river gorge past Uttarkashi and Chamba. The mountain road winds through terraced valley settlements before descending out of the lower Garhwal hills into the Doon valley. You arrive back in Dehradun by late afternoon or evening, convenient for catching evening trains or connecting flights home.
